Rory McIlroy on facing LIV golfers at the BMW PGA Championship: “It’s going to be hard for me to digest”

Rory McIlroy won the FedEx Cup playoffs for the third time on Sunday after an incredible comeback in the final round of the Tour Championship, but just after claiming his $18 million prize, the 22-time PGA Tour winner took the opportunity to criticize his competitors on the LIV Golf circuit, 18 which will. they will soon meet at the BMW PGA Championship next month.

McIlroy, 33, rallied from six shots to take down Scottie Scheffler, who was never down all week until the 70th hole and naturally feeling good about his win. That’s when McIlroy took a subtle dig at LIV Golf’s many dropouts.

“On the 70th hole is a good time to take the lead in a golf tournament,” he said, via Sports Illustrated. “Or the 52nd hole if you play somewhere else.”

Tensions are sure to reach a boiling point next month when McIlroy and others top-ranked players on the PGA Tour take on some of those same players at the BMW PGA Championship, as the DP World Tour has treated LIV Golf differently from the Tour.

McIlroy made his feelings on the subject clear: He’s not looking forward to it.

“If you believe in something, I think you have to speak up, and I strongly believe in this. I really do,” she said on Sunday. “I hate what it’s doing to the game of golf. I hate it. I really do. Like it’s going to be hard for me to go to Wentworth in a couple of weeks and see 18 of them there. That just doesn’t sit well with me.”

“So yeah, I feel strongly about it. I think what I’m saying are the right things, and I think when you think what you’re saying are the right things, you’re happy to take a chance.” ”

PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan revealed significant changes to the tour last week following a players-only meeting in Delaware where McIlroy, Tiger Woods and other top golfers met to discuss the continuing threat of LIV Golf and the direction of the tour.
