Production on an upcoming television series starring Natalie Portman and Lupita Nyong’o was halted late last week after a group in Baltimore threatened the production team, according to authorities. “Lady in the Lake” was filming in Baltimore when a group of people threatened to shoot a crew member, police said.
A spokesperson for the Baltimore Police Department confirmed tothat “the locals threatened the film’s producers that if they didn’t stop production, they would come back later…and shoot someone.”
“The locals told the growers that if they were paid, they would allow production to continue,” the spokesman said.
“Production leaders decided to err on the side of caution and reschedule the shoot after finding another location,” the spokesman said.
The spokesperson did not confirm the amount of money allegedly demanded, but The Baltimore Flag Reports that the group attempted to extort $50,000 from the crew.
Based on the book by best-selling author Laura Lippman, “The Lady of the Lake” began filming in Maryland in late April and will continue production throughout Baltimore through October. according to a press release from the Maryland Economic Development Association. The show will air on Apple TV+.
