‘Popular’ historians are no longer alone attracted by politics

History is hot in Joe Biden’s Washington. If you want to flatter the president, call his latest initiative “historic.” If you want me to flatter you, you’d better work to “remedy past injustices.” Mr. Biden even has a home historian, jon meachhamwriting his main speeches.

Mr. Biden met earlier this month with a group of historians, including Michael decided, Anna Applebaum other Sean Wilentz. The delegation from the past spent two hours briefing the president (then, immediately afterwards, the press) that American democracy is in peril and that our present moment is reminiscent of the period before the Civil War.
