NASA cancels the launch of the Artemis 1 lunar rocket due to an engine cooling problem

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida. — An engine cooling problem on NASA’s new giant rocket for deep space exploration forced the agency to cancel a long-awaited launch of the booster early Monday (Aug. 29).

NASA had mainly fueled its first space launch system (SLS) mega rocket to launch the Artemis 1 lunar mission Monday when launch controllers were unable to cool one of the four main engines to the temperatures needed to handle its super-cold booster. The problem stalled plans to launch the SLS rocket and its unmanned vehicles. orion spaceship on an ambitious 42-day test flight around the moon. Liftoff was scheduled for 8:33 a.m. EDT (12:33 GMT).
