How to clean your vacuum

Most of our appliances, including the ones we use to clean our homes, require some form of maintenance, and vacuum cleaners are no exception. And unfortunately, it involves more than just empty the bag or canister when it is completely full.

Considering all the dirt, dust, and grime that goes through your vacuum every time you use it, it makes sense that even the most modern vacuum cleaners They need to be cleaned from time to time to work properly. This is what you should know.

How to clean a vacuum cleaner

When cleaning a vacuum cleaner or any other appliance, it’s best to check the manufacturer’s instructions to make sure you don’t do anything to make things even worse. Even if you threw away the instructions years ago, you should be able to find them, or a complete owner’s manual—with a quick search online.

Today we are going to focus on canister broom vacuum cleaners (as opposed to those that use bags or are robots). Here it is a basic overview what to do:

  1. Disconnect the vacuum from its power source (i.e. unplug, remove battery, etc.)
  1. Empty the container, then wipe it clean with a dry cloth or paper towel.
  2. Remove all attachments, including extenders such as the stick or a flexible tube
  3. Using a pair of scissors, cut hair, string, and thread caught on the main rotating brush, as well as any attachments with smaller brushes.—being careful not to cut the bristles of the brush itself
  4. Use a household brush, old comb and/or tweezers to remove hair and other fibers stuck on or around other accessories.
  5. Remove and empty any lint traps or reusable filters in the vacuum.
  6. Finish disassembling the vacuum (if you haven’t already), separating everything from the motorized component
  7. Fill a tub or bowl with warm soapy water (dishwashing liquid works) and wash each part of the vacuum (without the motor or any electrical components) using sponges, brushes, or other cleaning tools as needed
  8. Rinse each piece in clean, warm water.
  9. Lay the vacuum parts out on a towel. for several hours, or as long as it takes for them to air dry completely
  10. Clean the outside of the vacuum, which probably got dirty while cleaning the inside.

After that, put your vacuum back together and marvel at how much better it performs..
