FACT CHECK: Was the US border closed due to violence in Tijuana?

a post shared on facebook states that the US border has been closed in Tijuana following a massive increase in drug cartel-based violence.

Verdict: False

Although the photos show recent violence in the area, the border has not been closed. A US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) spokesman denied the claim.

Fact check:

The border cities of Mexico have been the scene of violent events derived from “disputes [between rival gangs] or attempts to capture gang members,” according to CBS News. Some vehicles were set on fire, while some roads were blocked, the outlet reported.

Now, a post shared on Facebook claims that the US border was closed as a result of the violence. “The drug cartels declared it! Tijuana under attack”, affirms the caption of the photo of the publication. “All areas of Mexicali, Tecate and Rosarito are on high alert! The US border has been closed.”

The photos in the post appear to come from Independent news sources other publications on social networks (RELATED: Viral Post Claims Border Agents Can Enter Anyone’s Home Within 100 Miles Of The Border Without A Warrant)

The claim about the border, however, is false. No such statements about recent border closures appear in the CBP website or is it verified Social media pages. there is also no credible news reports suggesting that the border was recently ordered closed.

The United States Consulate in Tijuana issued a statements via his Twitter account instructing his government employees to “shelter in place until further notice.”

“The United States Consulate General in Tijuana is aware of reports of multiple vehicle fires, roadblocks, and heavy police activity in Tijuana, Mexicali, Rosarito, Ensenada, and Tecate,” the statement said in part.

“There were no changes for US Customs and Border Protection at our border crossings; no closures or new restrictions,” Jacqueline Wasiluk, a CBP spokeswoman, told Check Your Fact in an email.

“CBP officers remain vigilant as they process travelers arriving from Mexico. All travelers are subject to inspection prior to admission to the United States and are processed accordingly,” he added.

This is not the first time false claims about border security have circulated on social media. Check Your Fact recently debunked a June 2022 claim that suggested citizens within 100 miles of the border could be searched at home without a warrant.
