Britney Spears, who last November celebrated a legal victory that freed her from a 13-year conservatorship that controlled her personal and professional life, shares more about her experience during that time.
The singer posted a 22-minute audio clip to YouTube on Sunday addressing her conservatorship and the alleged abuse she says she suffered from her family.
“I was scared broken. I am sharing this because I want people to know that I am only human. I feel like a victim after these experiences and how can I fix this if I don’t talk about it,” Spears said.
CNN has contacted representatives for Spears to verify the authenticity of the audio message, which was published in its entirety on TMZ and other outlets.
On the recording, Spears says she’s had “tons of opportunities” to interview media outlets, including Oprah Winfrey, who would have paid her to “share the hardships and really whatever is on my mind.”
The audio recording also included a reference to a time Spears says she was sent to a facility where six units of blood were drawn weekly. in a cheephe later clarified those comments, writing, “A reminder to some of you who may have been confused by what I said…it was 6 small vials of blood, not 6 gallons!!!”
Lynne Spears, the singer’s mother, appeared to respond to the audio recording in a post on her verified Instagram account on Sunday night.
“Britney, all your life I have done my best to support your dreams and wishes! And I have also tried my best to help you out of difficulties! I have never given you nor will I turn my back on you! Your rejection of the countless times I’ve flown and calls make me feel desperate! I’ve tried everything” she wrote. “I love you very much, but this conversation is just for you and me, face to face, in private.”
Spears debuted her first new single in six years on Friday with the release of “Hold Me Closer,” her collaboration with Elton John.
“I have an amazing song right now with one of the most brilliant men of our time and I’m so grateful,” Spears said in her YouTube post. “But if you’re a weirdo, if you’re an introverted weirdo like me, what I feel alone most of the time and you needed to hear a story like this today to not feel alone, you should know this: my life has been far from easy and you are not alone.
