BCWW: Korean TV content in the spotlight at revived convention

More than 600 corporate buyers from 30 countries are expected to be in Seoul, South Korea, beginning Wednesday for the in-person return of the Broadcast WorldWide convention, better known as BCWW.

Although BCWW bills itself as Asia’s largest streaming content market, given the strength of the Korean Wave, much of the focus will be on Korean content and the business of working with Korean companies. Registered buyers and potential partners include Amazon Prime, Warner Bros. Discovery, NBCUniversal, PCCW, the Hong Kong-based owner of Viu, and China’s iQiyi, all of which have already become providers of K programming.

“For the past 22 years, BCWW has served as the foundation for K-content to gain the worldwide attention it is receiving today,” said Cho Hyun-rae, president of the government-backed Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA). . He added that he hopes KOCCA and BCWW “provide continued support for K content.”

The event, which will take place from August 31 to September 1. 2, 2022, at Dondaemun Design Plaza, comprises a familiar mix of produce market with booths and meeting rooms; conference sessions that are hybrid of both in-person and live-streamed; a product display; and pitch sessions and business installations for unrealized projects seeking funding or partner companies.

Conference sessions are scheduled to cover topics including: global content trends; content analysis; the details of the Korean charm; and the growth potential of the industry.

The conference kicks off with a special session on the current process and potential of Korea’s software industry. While there are many arguments supporting the continued growth of the Korean content industry, these range from the country’s lack of an imperial past to the way Korean-created content pushes back sex and violence and a digital approach that allows for Korean companies to tackle Gen-Z: The long-term sustainability of the industry is a recurring topic of concern.

The session will use “”, produced by Astory, broadcast locally on Skylife ENA and broadcast internationally on Netflix for continued success, as a starting point for discussion.

Another session will examine the secret sauce behind the format’s best-selling “I Can See Your Voice” and its localized adaptations. Lessons from “Bang Bang Con,” the online concert collection put in place by K-Pop idols BTS at a time when in-person performances and fan meeting events were not possible due to travel restrictions, will also be shared. COVID.

Other companies in the BCWW spotlight include Chorokbaem Media, producer of JTBC’s hit show “My Liberation Diary” (also known as “My Liberation Notes”), and “Baby Shark’s” The Pinkfong Company.
Mike Beale, General Manager of Global Creative Network at ITV Studio, Park Hyun, Vice President of Global Business at Powerhouse Production Nexus Studio Dragon, and Park Jun-seo, Production Manager at the revamped studio SLL will be on hand to discuss international cooperation and joint production. strategy.

Product showcases will showcase new shows including “The Youngest Son of a Conglomerate” and the dating reality show “EXchange Season 2,” which is scheduled to launch in the last four months of the year.
