Amber Heard’s sister, Whitney Henriquez, slammed MTV and Johnny Depp on Sunday for his electronic cameo at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards. But the reaction was probably not what she expected.
“@MTV You are disgusting and clearly desperate,” Henriquez wrote in an Instagram story. “I really hope none of the people who made this call have daughters… #DVMAS #ISTANDWITHAMBERHEARD.”
He was referring to the show’s decision to project Depp’s face onto his signature Moon Person persona as the spacesuit floated above the stage. Depp cracked a few jokes, including, “Hey, you know what? He needed the job.”
He then added: “I just want you to know that I am available for birthdays, bar mitzvahs, bat mitzvahs, weddings, wakes, anything you need. None. You say so. So, oop, I’m a dentist too.”
It was Depp’s most high-profile public appearance, short of concerts in Europe with Jeff Beck, since he and Heard met in his libel trial in April and he went home almost victorious after the June 1 verdict. He promoted the VMAs cameo on Instagram. with a video clip and the short caption, “guess who?”
In here postHenriquez took the network’s logo, in turquoise, and added a hot pink D, making it read “DVMA,” as in “domestic violence music awards.” He included a glamorous image of Heard.
In return, Henriquez got a small social media buildup from hardcore Depp supporters and essentially no reaction from Heard supporters. Most of those comments came on Monday, although the Instagram story was posted on Sunday night.
Meanwhile, Depp’s Instagram clip racked up almost a million likes and more than 16,000 comments.
Many new comments about Henriquez “I’m with Amber Heard” The June 5 Instagram post said she was the one who was “disgusting” and “desperate,” or called her out for allegedly kissing Depp when she lived in the Eastern Columbia building in downtown Los Angeles. They accused her of covering up her sister with her. testimony at the libel trial and she doubted her honesty on the stand.
A man who criticized Depp in the comments said in part: “Such strong hate and support! evil still has a bright future ahead of it.”
But someone else wrote “what a load of rubbish” and included a slew of “joy” emojis, with faces laughing until they cried.
On Twitter, where the tide seemed strongly in Depp’s favor, the conversation seemed fueled by users who had spent time on social media doing little more than supporting one side or the other of the former couple.
The highest profile among them could be British music journalist Eve Barlow, the Heard supporter who was barred from participating in the libel trial in Virginia after she was caught using a cell phone in court. Before being sanctioned, Barlow traveled daily to court with Heard in the actor’s vehicle. A few weeks ago, she and Heard were seen having lunch together In Israel.
“It sucks that a man can continue the circus of his charade of reality publicly for better or worse while a woman has to shield herself from public life. #GiveAmberHerVoiceBack,” Barlow tweeted Sunday night.
She kept the retweets about Depp’s cameo on Monday and tweeted herself, “I wish @MTV could see the status of my inbox this morning and the terror and anguish of women living in fear for their own lives. Absolute idiots.”
